I heard a story of a man on business whom I will never know, but I know God wanted me to hear his story.

"A certain shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the world. The lad wandered through the desert for forty days, and finally came upon a beautiful castle, high atop a mountain. It was there that the wise man lived.

Rather than finding a saintly man, though, our hero, on entering the main room of the castle, saw hive of activity: tradesmen came and went, people were conversing in the corners, a small orchestra was playing soft music, and there was a table covered with platters of the most delicious food in that part of the world. The wise man conversed with every one, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn to be given the man's attention.

The wise man listened attentively to the boy's explanation of why he had come, but told him that he didn't have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.

'Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something.' said the wise man, handing the boy a teaspoon that held two drops of oil. 'As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill.'

The boy began climbing and descending the many stairways of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to the room where the wise man was.
'Well,' asked the wise man, 'did you see the Persian tapestries that are hanging in my dining hall? Did you see the garden that it took the master gardener ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful parchments in my library?'

The boy was embarrassed, and confessed that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil that the wise man had entrusted to him.

'Then go back and observe the marvels of my world,' said the wise man. 'You cannot trust a man if you don't know his house.'

Relieved, the boy picked up the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace, this time observing all of the works of art on the ceilings and the walls. He saw the gardens, the mountains all around him, the beauty of the flowers, and the taste with which everything had been selected. Upon returning to the wise man, he related in detail everything he had seen.

"But where are the drops of oil I entrusted to you?' asked the wise man.
.
Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone.
.
"Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you,' said the wisest of wise men. "The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.'

This is a strategy that can help you practice integrating service into your life. It will show you how easy it is and how good it feels to do something nice for someone without expecting anything in return.
.
So often, either consciously or unconsciously, we want something from others, especially when we have done something for them - "I cleaned the bathroom, she should clean the kitchen." Or, "I took care of her child last week, she should offer this week." It's almost as though we keep score of our own good deeds rather than remembering that giving is its own reward.
.
When you do something nice for someone, just to do it, you'll notice (if you're quiet enough inside yourself) a beautiful feeling of ease and peace. Just as vigorous exercise releases endorphins in your brain that make you feel good physically, your acts of loving-kindness release the emotional equivalent. Your reward is the feeling you receive in knowing that you participated in an act of kindness. You don't need something in return or even a "thank you." In fact, you don't even need to let the person know what you have done.
.
What interferes with this peaceful feeling is our expectation of reciprocity. Our own thoughts interfere with our peaceful feelings as they clutter our minds, as we get caught up in what we think we want or need. The solution is to notice your "I want something in return" thoughts and gently dismiss them. In the absence of these thoughts, your positive feelings will return.
.
See if you can think of something really thoughtful to do for someone, and don't expect anything in return - whether it's surprising your spouse with a clean garage or organized desk, mowing your neighbor's lawn, or coming home early from work to give your spouse a break from the kids. When you complete your favor, see if you can tap into the warm feeling of knowing you have done something really nice without expecting anything from the person you have just helped. If you practice, I think you'll discover that the feelings themselves are reward enough.

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying South Korea's first astronaut blasted off into space today, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Soyuz TMA-12 spaceship disappeared into a clear sky as planned at 5:16 pm (2116 AEST) after lifting off from the world's oldest space launch pad, used by Russia's Yuri Gagarin when he became the first human in space in 1961.

Yi So-Yeon, a 29-year-old nanotechnology engineer, began her journey to the International Space Station (ISS) alongside Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko. Originally a reserve candidate, Yi was picked for the flight last month after Russia accused Ko San, the primary South Korean crew member, of removing sensitive documents from a training centre. Ko later apologised for his actions.

The South Korean government paid Russia about $25 million for the right to send the first Korean into space. Along with her Russian colleagues, Yi will conduct scientific experiments at the ISS during her 11-day mission.

Sadly, many of us continually postpone our happiness indefinitely. It's not that we consciously set out to do so, but that we keep convincing ourselves, "Someday I'll be happy." We tell ourselves we'll be happy when our bills are paid, when we get out of school, get our first job, a promotion. We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough - we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire. And on and on and on!
.
Meanwhile, life keeps moving forward. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when?
.
Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D' Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.

Drew Barrymore donates $1m to WFP

March 3, 2008 - Drew Barrymore , one of the world’s most recognised film stars, has announced a personal donation of US$ 1 million on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to help the World Food Programme (WFP) feed thousands of school children in Kenya.

The Charlie's Angel star visited the slums of Nairobi in Kenya in 2005 to see for herself how hungry children are suffering across the world. She saw children going to school without even having a bit of breakfast and decided to help with the WFP's latest campaign.

"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," said the actress. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future."

Now Ms Barrymore is joining FIFA World Player of the Year, Kaka, to promote the Fill the Cup appeal, which aims to feed ten million more African schoolchildren by Thanksgiving Day 2008, which falls on November 27th.

The international charity is asking for donations and says that just 25 cents (which is less than 13 pence) can fill a cup full of porridge to give a schoolchild a wholesome breakfast.

"I urge everyone, everywhere, to help WFP Fill the Cup for hungry children, and make hunger history," Ms Barrymore said.

Around 59 million children go to school on an empty stomach in developing countries across the world.

Since we know we are going to die someday, and that we are going to look back on our lives and reflect on what’s important, why not start living that way today? Right now? Why not plan our lives, our jobs, our day-to-day, moment-to-moment experiences based on the inevitable moment of reflection that will be upon us sooner than any of us can possibly imagine? It’s no coincidence that one of the most widely used phrases is “time flies.” It really does. Even so, if we could only live the way we know deep down we should, we would guarantee ourselves a life of richness and fulfillment. If we answer Stephen Levine’s question honestly and act accordingly, we will have no regrets---none whatsoever.

I became 34 years old today:
the third round of my life has just begun.
Am I ready? You bet I am!~

It has been 17 years since the doctor said that I couldn't live for more than a year unless I had a special spinal surgery. Back then, the success rate for the surgery was lower than 25 % (I actually could've died during the surgery) and the risk of being paralyzed from waist down after the surgery was relatively high. Without the surgery, however, my spine would press my own heart and eventually end my life. I had no choice...
.
(To make the long story short..,) On May 15, 1991, I had 13 hour-surgery on my back to prevent my spine from collapsing. It was half-successful; I survived but have had to live with the ongoing pain since the surgery. Anyway, it was 17 years ago and I was 17 years old at that time. So, I call the first 17 years of my life ‘round 1’, and the other 17 years ‘round 2’.

Today whether I like it or not, the third round started.
Am I ready? Of course I am!

Broken window theory

A successful strategy for preventing vandalism is to fix the problems when they are small. Clean up the sidewalk every day, and the tendency is for litter not to accumulate (or for the rate of littering to be much less). Problems do not escalate and thus respectable residents do not flee a neighborhood.

Occam's razor (sometimes spelled Ockham's razor) is a principle attributed to the 14th-century English logician and Franciscan friar William of Ockham.

The principle states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. The principle is often expressed in Latin as the lex parsimoniae ("law of parsimony" or "law of succinctness"): "entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", or "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity".

This is often paraphrased as "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best." In other words, when multiple competing theories are equal in other respects, the principle recommends selecting the theory that introduces the fewest assumptions and postulates the fewest entities.

On September 11, 2001, sunrise came at 6:33 A.M. The forecast called for clear skies and a beautiful day.

At 8:45 A.M., American Airlines Flight 11, bound from Boston to Los Angeles, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

At 9:05 A.M., United Airlines Flight 175,
also bound from Boston to Los Angeles,
struck the South Tower.

At 9:50 A.M., forty-five minutes after it had been hit,
the South Tower fell.

At 10:30 A.M., an hour and forty-five minutes after it
had been hit, the North Tower fell...

At 10:29 A.M., on May 30, 2002, cleanup efforts at Ground Zero were completed. There was widespread agreement throughout the city that nothing would ever be the same again.

To be more accurate, that morning nineteen terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers crashed a third airliner (American Airlines Flight 77) into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Passengers and members of the flight crew on the fourth aircraft (United Airlines Flight 93) attempted to retake control of their plane from the hijackers; that plane crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In addition to the 19 hijackers, 2,974 people died as an immediate result of the attacks. The victims were predominantly civilians.

I was living at somewhere in Pennsylvania (actually near the town where the fourth plane crashed into) when those horrible terror attacks took place. That morning I got lots of phone calls from my family members and friends who desperately wanted to know if I was ok. I also got an email from the school which suggested that international students should not come to campus on the day for their own safety. The day started like that and it was really horrible...

I still remember the fear and anger (with deep sorrow) that I had to go through... and I won't forget...never
